ESPR timeline: which product groups follow batteries

Batteries have a fixed date. Other product groups follow as the Commission adopts a delegated act for each. This guide sets out the timeline as we understand it, separating what is law from what is expected. Our calendar was last checked on 31 October 2026.

What is already law

The Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation (ESPR), Regulation (EU) 2024/1781, entered into force on 18 July 2024. The Commission adopted the first Working Plan, covering 2025 to 2030, on 16 April 2025. It names textiles, furniture, tyres, mattresses, iron and steel and aluminium, along with horizontal measures.

A product group has a passport requirement only once its delegated act is adopted and applies. Until then, the plan tells you where to look, not what to do.

What is expected

The dates below are indicative. They come from the Commission's timetable and from other sources, and some sources place them a year earlier or later. Check EUR-Lex for the current status of each act.

  • Fourth quarter of 2026: delegated act for iron and steel expected.
  • Third to fourth quarter of 2027: delegated acts expected for textiles, aluminium and tyres.
  • 2028: the passport is expected to become mandatory for packaging, iron and steel, and construction materials, and a delegated act for furniture is expected.
  • 2029: the passport is expected to become mandatory for ICT products, tyres, aluminium, textiles and detergents, with a delegated act for mattresses expected.

How to plan around uncertain dates

You do not need the final delegated act to start. Whatever the exact rules, you will need to know which of your products are in scope, which data you hold, which suppliers hold the rest and how you will approve and record it.

  1. Watch the delegated act for your product group.
  2. Map your products and suppliers against the likely data categories.
  3. Run one pilot product line through a collection and approval process.
  4. Adjust the data model when the act is published.

Companies that have already run suppliers through a structured process find the final rules easier to meet, because the work is a matter of adding fields and not of building the process from scratch.

Batteries come first

The only product group with a fixed legal date today is batteries, from 18 February 2027. Our guide to the battery passport deadline covers what that date includes.
